Domestic violence does not discriminate based on the individual. There are, however, statistical differences in the prevalence and impact of domestic violence when it comes to gender. It cannot be ignored that women are significantly more likely to be victims than men, five times as likely in cases of sexual assault. Given the gendered nature of violence itself, it is no surprise that much of the healing and preventative work associated with it also comes at the hands of women.
Not all of it though.
There are many outstanding men, whether survivors or not, who choose to use the privilege associated with their status to join the fight against domestic violence. These men deserve to be acknowledged for their contributions. One such individual is Martino Cartier.
Cartier is most well-known for his success as a stylist and salon owner. With a staff of over 50, his salon reached the height of popularity after being featured on Bravo TV. This exposure garnered millions of fans, as well as features in Modern Salon Magazine, Vogue, Launchpad, Behind the Chair, Salon Today, and The Golden Globes.
Rather than simply revel in newfound stardom, however, Cartier has remained humble and continues to use his celebrity platform to enact change. What sets “Martino Cartier” salons apart from others in the beauty industry is their dedication to social change. Cartier himself attributes the success of his brand to a combination of charity and education. According to his website, “It originally started just trying to help out a family with a terminally ill child looking to raise $5,000.” In just one day, they surpassed their goal by raising over $20,000.
Since that time, Cartier has founded a non-profit that facilitates collaboration between other salon owners looking to support women and children battling cancer. The organization, called “Wigs and Wishes,” unites stylists and beauty industry experts worldwide in their goal to alleviate the stress and pain of chronic illness. Alongside these partners, Wigs and Wishes grants women momentary respite by providing complimentary beauty services and granting wishes to children struggling against cancer.
Not only does Cartier seek to empower women through his own non-profit, but he also donates to causes and organizations that engage with gendered work in other ways – organizations such as Break the Silence. Through tireless engagement and endless generosity, Cartier has supported countless survivors nationwide. It is due to these efforts that he was nominated to be Break the Silence’s first ever “Man of the Year” in 2017.
Throughout his career, Cartier has maintained his commitment to women-centered causes and had a personal hand in providing positivity to those in emotionally strained places. As he gains recognition and success, he continues to expand the impact of his efforts–while giving credit to those already doing this work and allowing space for others to join.
It is his kindness, dedication, and charitable nature that make Martino Cartier a champion of domestic violence.
